What Can Yoga Do for You?
If you're just now learning about yoga, you may want to know why this form of exercise is right for you. Here are a few great reasons why, once you start doing yoga, you may never need another type of workout again!
Yoga will help you build core strength.
If you haven't yet begun a yoga practice, then maybe you haven't given much thought to your core.
Consider it now. Your core, the center of your body, and the center of your life force. The muscles in the center of your body protect your organs - heart, lungs, liver, pancreas. We refer to these as vital organs because they keep us alive.
But did you ever think that a person could be either less or more alive depending on how well their organs are functioning? You've heard the term vitality, and you've probably known some people who seem to be more vibrant, or fully alive, than others. Why is this?
What makes someone seem more awake, alive and vibrant? Perhaps their eyes appear bright and clear, their posture is upright. They seem alert and responsive to their surroundings. Maybe their muscles look toned and shapely, and their hands and feet feel warm with healthy blood flow.
These are all signs that the organs in the core of the body are primed and pumping life-giving forces to our bodies. What gives us life? Air for our lungs, water for our cells, nutrients for our immune systems to fight disease.
As civilized humans who have come a long, long way from the life we once knew as wild beasts, connected to nature. Think how much our bodies have changed over time.
Think about the middle of your body, your stomach and your digestive system, and what goes into there on a daily basis. Pounds of processed foods, milled grains, sugar and salt and powdered, homogenized forms of nutrition stripped of its life-giving properties.
Think about how our bodies were made to move. Once, we ran wild, scavenging the forests and fields, cavorting in the open air and natural light of the life-giving sun. Now we vegetate in a slumped posture in front of machines that emit fake light. This is the opposite of living, this is the beginning of death, for humans.
It's time to counteract the negative effects that a diet of processed foods and a sedentary lifestyle has had on our health and on the shape and function of our bodies. It's time to take back our lost vitality as a species.
It starts with the core. Yoga fixes the core, and this will change your entire life.
