How to Know if Freelancing or Working for Yourself is Right for You
Not everyone feels comfortable in the freelance role. It’s okay if you don’t and awesome if you do. It also might take some transitioning to the lifestyle before you start to say things like "I run my own business," or "I freelance," and it flows naturally out of your mouth.
Are you built for freelance? The best way to know is to try it out. In the beginning, you might feel like a stranger in a foreign land, but with time and experience, you could start to feel at ease freelancing.
What are some signs that freelance could be a match for your personality and work style?
You’re a self-starter. You don’t need a boss to give you direction or tell you what to do.
You think independently. Being told what to do by a would-be supervisor makes you uncomfortable for a lot of the time. You have your own ideas about how get thing done; and most of the time, this works out well for you. Your mind is full of income-generating possibilities and you take action on these ideas.
People already think of you as being an expert or specialist of a trade, and you could easily pivot into that if you needed to make it a full-time freelance focus. Productivity isn’t an issue for you. You’re good with budgeting your time, and you don’t waste your nonbillable hours on non-essential tasks.
You’re good as a solo act. Maybe you prefer to work alone, or you like to keep contact with coworkers to a minimum.
You work odd hours. Many freelancers started out in the workforce feeling a conflict between the traditional 9 to 5 active business hours and their own, internal clock.
You’re okay with feast or famine. Freelance workflow, and money flow, always seem to be all or nothing. This doesn’t bother you, and you know how to plan for this.
You prefer to work on the move. Many freelancers balk in an in-person work setting but thrive when they get to travel and carry out tasks from their laptop or phone.
You can handle procuring your own “benefits.” Purchasing healthcare insurance on the open market, doing your own taxes or itemizing for your accountant aren’t things that freak you out.
You’re kind of an entrepreneurial genius. Maybe you have an inventor brain, you’re solutions oriented, and you know how to market all of this to create profits.
Criticism doesn’t make you fall apart. You bounce back from tough experiences. Your emotions don’t affect your professional decisions or affect how you deal with people.
You’re open to growth and embrace a learning mindset.
